Favourite things about Birmingham – part 2 of many
One of my other favourite places in Birmingham is the Irish Club. I think it’s my favourite live music venue in the city. (Having said that, I’ve not been to them all – but anyway).
The Irish Club has loads going for it. Free parking, easy transport links (a few minutes walk from New Street Station and many bus links) and best of all *atmosphere*.
It’s one of those places that shouldn’t have atmosphere but does. It’s essentially a large community centre with a small stage, sticky carpets and a bar.
On a gig night, I can’t help getting excited when I see the queues outside. It’s a small enough venue to be intimate, but large enough that you can stand at the back and still see the stage (handy if you don’t like crowds!).
Memorably I saw Eels there, and the band came on and started playing without E their singer. Where was E? The question was soon answered when he started singing as he weaved through the crowd. A wonderful experience.
Each of the gigs I’ve seen there has been great. I’m hoping I’ll be getting to plenty more too.
Sounds like an interesting place. What street is it on? Do they have a website or list of upcoming gigs anywhere?
