StreetAdvisor

Here’s a good example of a useful “Web 2.0” startup: StreetAdvisor, which has just opened it’s doors to the public, allows users to rate and review various aspects of their street, such as mobile reception and Internet access. Users can also upload pictures / videos of their street, and view satellite photographs of the area courtesy of Google Maps.
Sites like this have the potential to greatly diminish the information asymmetry involved in tasks such as trying to find a new area to live in, decreasing the reliance on an estate agent to provide all the facts you want to know. So what are you waiting for? Sign up and review your street now!

Trying to quit smoking?

A bit late notice, but if you’re in the area:

NHS staff from Birmingham’s Stop Smoking Project are in Brindleyplace today, with carbon monoxide testers, competition details and free goody bags! Oooh!

Based in Central Square, they will be giving advice, information and offering support to anyone who is considering trying to stop smoking. Brindleyplace is continuing to run Stop Smoking Clinics in Bannatynes Health Club (what used to be the Livingwell Gym in Brindleyplace #4) every Tuesday morning & Thursday afternoon.

Saucy Hijinks

*sob* Today is the last day of production for HP sauce at the local Aston HP factory!

Not everyone is taking this sitting down, mind. Yesterday Ray Egan, a retired police officer, decided to protest out on the roof of the plant for a few hours, before stopping for lunch (which was, possibly, a Bacon and HP sauce sarnie).

European Athletics Entertainment

The European Athletics Indoor Championships is being held at the NIA today, Saturday and Sunday.

Apparently Brindleyplace is the official entertainment zone. The fun kicks off tonight with a City Mascot race held in Central Square from 5.30pm. This will involve the mascots from the Blues, Villa, Baggies, Walsall, Warwickshire Cricket, Sea Life Turtle and several others. The Sports Cafe on Broad Street is even taking bets, for you gambling types. Read on for a breakdown of all the events taking place over this weekend!
